Violet City
From Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver Wiki
Violet City (キキョウシティ) is the second major city encountered in the game. It is also the location of the first gym. The northern half of the city will not be accessible until HM03 Surf has been obtained.

Earl's Pokémon Academy (Optional)
Earl's Pokémon Academy is a trainer's school for new players to learn basic battling strategies and training tips. If you go up to the blackboard, you can read about the strengths and weaknesses of various Pokémon types.
If you are already a veteran of the Pokémon series, there's no need to waste your time here.
Sprout Tower
The Sprout Tower (マダツボミのとう) is a pagoda-like building located at the northern end of Violet City. It has three levels filled with sages, who battle with weak Bellsprouts. If you selected Cyndaquil as your starter Pokémon, this dungeon should be extremely easy.
After conquering the Sprout Tower, the barriers in Violet City Gym will disappear, and you'll be able to take the lift up to the second floor to challenge the trainers and leader.

Violet City Gym
The Violet City Gym (キキョウジム) specializes in Flying-type Pokémon, which are weak against Rock types. If you managed to capture some Rock-type Pokemon in the Dark Cave on Route 31, now would be the best time to use them.
If your Pokémon is running low on HP, you can head back to the Violet City Pokémon Center for healing between trainer battles.
After you defeat Falkner, you will receive the Zephyr Badge and TM51 Roost.
It may be interesting to note, the two Gym Members can be avoided by walking along transparent path following the wall. (Have to verify for sure) However, for much needed experience it's advisable to still fight them.
Gym Members
Bird Keeper Abe
- Spearow - Lv. 9, 110 Exp
Bird Keeper Rod
- Pidgey - Lv. 7, 82 Exp
- Pidgey - Lv. 7, 82 Exp
224 yen
Leader Falkner
- Pidgey - Lv. 9, 106 Exp
- Pidgeotto - Lv. 13, 314 Exp
Prizes: 1560 yen, Zephyr Badge, TM51 Roost.
Strategy: This Gym shouldn't cause much trouble, as Falkner's Pokemon aren't too much harder than the ordinary Trainers you've seen so far. However those who chose Chikorita as their starter may have some difficulty if they've not caught/trained another Pokemon or two, due to Grasses weakness to Flying type attacks.
To make this Gym really easy, you can even catch a Mareep on Route 32 before the battle. With little leveling up, Mareep's Thundershock could probably handle the Gym by itself.
Outside of catching a Mareep beforehand, just keep hitting them with Tackle/Scratch or use STAB elemental attacks like Ember if you picked Cyndaquil or Water Gun if you picked Totodile. Despite it's type disadvantage, Razor Leaf from Chikorita does about the same amount of damage to Falkners Pokemon as Tackle. Note however that Razor Leaf has a higher Critical hit ratio than Tackle, so it's probably the better choice.
It's advisable to get a potion or two from the Mart before the battle, just in case.
Leader Falkner's Second Team
- Staraptor - Lv. 50 (Normal/Flying),
- Noctowl - Lv. 52 (Normal/Flying), 1805 Exp
- Swellow - Lv. 52 (Normal/Flying), 1805 Exp
- Honchkrow - Lv. 54 (Dark/Flying),
- Pelipper - Lv. 48 (Water/Flying), 1687 Exp
- Pidgeot - Lv. 56 (Normal/Flying), 2064 Exp
Important Note: You don't rematch the Gym Leader at their respective gyms, but instead in the Fighting Dojo in Saffron City of the Kanto Region.
You must first meet the Gym Leader outside of their Gym (which is in a set place at set times), where you obtain their phone number. You can then phone them for a rebattle at certain times, and they will be waiting in the Fighting Dojo.

Recieving the Mystery Egg
After exiting Violet City gym, you receive a phone call from Professor Elm about the mystery egg you delivered to him from Mr. Pokémon, after which you should head over to the Poké Mart.
Inside the Poké Mart should be Professor Elm's assistant. If you talk to him with a free spot in your party, you will receive the mystery egg! If you raise it by walking around enough, it will hatch into a Togepi.
