Arriving in Vermilion

After leaving the ship you will see Suicune. Eusine will arrive and talk a bit but won't fight. Then into the city. Machop is still there working and you can "help it". Smash the rocks to find some prizes and Digletts(Lv. 25 to 38). Then go to the Pokemon club. Talk with the guy that is on the desk, listen to his story and he will offer you a Rare Candy. After you visited the CopyCat girl on Saffron talk with the guy that is on the table that has a Clefairy Doll. After a brief talk he will let you take the Clefairy Doll. Only after you do this, Steven will appear outside warning you that Latios (SoulSilver) or Latias (HeartGold) are roaming around. Then go back to Saffron and deliver the Clefairy Doll to receive the Train Pass that let´s you use the Magnet Train to travel between Saffron City and Goldenrod. If you surf from the east side of the Vermilion Pier you will find a piece of land near the Pier. Use your itemfinder on the land to get X3 Pearl.

Vermilion Gym

To open the energy gates to face the gym leader you need to find a button on/in the garbage bins. The first switch is random, so you need to search every bin to find it. When you find it, the second switch is always in a bin that is 1 space from that one. It can be the one to the right, the one to the left, the one down or the one up. Keep trying and you will find it. If you don´t get the correct second switch, you will need to search for the first one again since it changes place everytime you fail.

Gym Leader Lt. Surge

  • Raichu - Lv. 51 (Electric), 889 Exp
  • Electrode - Lv. 47 (Electric), 1007 Exp
  • Magneton - Lv. 47 (Electric/Steel), 1081 Exp
  • Electrode - Lv. 47 (Electric), 1007 Exp
  • ELectabuzz - Lv. 53 (Electric), 1181 Exp

Prizes: 7800 Yen, Thunder Badge, TM34 (Shock Wave)

Strategy: Electric-Type Pokemon only have one weakness: Ground. All of Surge's Pokemon are weak to Ground attacks, and Magneton is an Electric/Steel Pokemon, so it has a whopping X4 weakness. As such it's a good idea to have at least one Ground-type Pokemon (who're immune to Electric attacks) on your team with a Ground attack. Earthquake is probably your best bet.

There's no point in trying to decrease foes' accuracy, or increasing your evasiveness, as Surge's Pokemon know Shock Wave, which never misses.

Important Note: at some point in the game Lt. Surge will trade you a foreign Pikachu named Volty, for your Pikachu. Volty will be holding a Yellow Shard.

Gym Leader Lt. Surge - Rematch Team

  • Raichu - Lv. 60 (Electric), 1046 Exp
  • Manectric - Lv. 52 (Electric), 1248 Exp
  • Magnezone - Lv. 52 (Electric/Steel),
  • Electrode - Lv. 52 (Electric), 1114 Exp
  • Pachirisu - Lv. 58 (Electric),
  • Electivire - Lv. 56 (Electric),

Important Note: You don't rematch the Gym Leader at their respective gyms, but instead in the Fighting Dojo in Saffron City of the Kanto Region.

You must first meet the Gym Leader outside of their Gym (which is in a set place at set times), where you obtain their phone number. You can then phone them for a rebattle at certain times, and they will be waiting in the Fighting Dojo.

Steven reveals Latias and Latios are released

In Vermilion City, you run into Steven Stone, ex-champion of the Hoenn region. He reveals to you that the legendary Pokemon Latias and Latios are now roaming Kanto at lv35 available to capture. You will meet Steven later in Siplh Co, Saffron City, after you have beaten Red (this is how you obtain a Hoenn Starter).

Important Note: After you Defeat Red, you will find Steven in the Silph Co. Choose one of the Hoenn starters and meet him in the Pewter Museum, talk to him. Steven will go back to the Silph Co. atrium and he will trade you his Beldum for a Forretress. The Beldum is named Armor (in Japanese) holding a Dawn Stone.
