General Overview

The Ruins of Alph are a mysterious set of ancient buildings said to have been created 1500 years ago. There are several cube-ish buildings and plenty of rubble scattered around the ruins. Some of the buildings can be entered immediately upon arriving at Violet City, some take the move Surf to get to, and others are hollow. There is a building on the east where researchers are investigating the ruins.

Kabuto Puzzle

Find one of the buildings on the northeastern side of the Ruins of Alph and walk through and to the right. You'll need to walk through two empty buildings before entering the third, in which you will find a kind of tour guide. She will introduce you to the puzzle of the Ruins of Alph. It's really a simple puzzle, and it makes no sense that the professors investigating the Ruins can't solve it, but this is Pokemon. It doesn't have to make sense.

Approach the center tile and press A to start the puzzle. The puzzle is much simpler in HeartGold and SoulSilver than it was in the original Gold and Silver. There are only four pieces that need to be rearranged to complete the picture of a Kabuto. Double-tap a piece to rotate it. File:Kobuto_Puzzle.PNGFile:kobut1.PNGFile:kobut2.PNG

The Unown and the Unown Note

Once you have completed the puzzle, it will glow, and then the floor will open and you will fall down into an eerie chamber full of statues. A young man will automatically talk to you and give you the Unown Note, a Key Item that records data for all of the Unown you have captured. It doesn't have much of a practical purpose, though, and it's completely optional (as is the entire sub-plot of the Ruins of Alph).

Now that you have solved the puzzle, Unown are free to be caught in the chamber. They aren't worth training, though, so once you fill your Unown Note, it may be a good idea to release most or all of the Unown you caught as they tend to take up a lot of PC storage space.
