Walkthrough
Welcome to Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver!
Press the third button in order to begin the game. You will be asked your gender and player name before you begin your adventure in the Pokémon world!
You will find yourself in your bedroom, located on the upper floor of your house. Walk down the staircase and talk to Mom. Then exit the house.
This is New Bark Town (ワカバタウン, Wakaba Town), a small and quiet village in the land of Johto. Walk over to the neighboring building, which houses Prof. Elm's lab.
Once inside, the professor will talk to you about an errand he wants you to run for him. Specifically, he wants you to see a Mr. Pokémon on Route 30 for a mysterious egg, and return it to him so he can research it. In return, you will get to pick one of three special Pokémon to be your partner.
The three available starter Pokémon are Chikorita (チコリータ), the Leaf Pokémon; Cyndaquil (ヒノアラシ, Hinoarashi), the Fire Mouse Pokémon; and Totodile (ワニノコ, Waninoko), the Big Jaw Pokémon. Each Pokémon starts out at Lv. 5.
Which Pokémon to choose is largely a matter of preference. Cyndaquil's Fire-type is advantageous in the Sprout Tower, one of the earliest dungeons, as well as the second gym. However, it needs the most experience points to evolve to its final form (at Lv. 36.) On the other hand, Totodile evolves to its final form at only Lv. 30, but its Water type presents a slight disadvantage in the early stages of the game.
To inspect a Pokémon, tap one of the Poké Balls once. Tap the PokéBall a second time to confirm your choice. Once you've chosen a Pokémon, you will be asked if you want to nickname him/her (top choice = Yes [はい]; bottom choice = No [いいえ]) and it will begin following you!
As you leave the lab, Prof. Elm's assistant will give you X5 Potion, which restores health when your Pokémon is injured during battle.
Now, you will have to do one last thing before you can leave this town and set off on your adventure. Head back home and speak to Mom to receive your PokéGear. This is a very important device that will serve many useful functions along the way.
As you leave New Bark Town toward Route 29, Prof. Elm will hurry out of his lab to add his phone number to your PokéGear so that you can receive pointers from him if you're stuck on where to go next.
