Ecruteak Gym
The trainers in Ecruteak Gym specialize in Ghost-type Pokémon. You will not be able to challenge the trainers here until you have defeated your rival in the Burned Tower. Use strong Ghost/Dark/Psychic-type attacks, and watch out for attacks like Mean Look and Curse.
The puzzles in the gym works as follows: every time you defeat a gym member, the walkway around her vanishes from view. You are supposed to memorize what the walkway looks like in order to proceed. If you fall off the walkway, you are returned to the entrance. Use the map to the right as a guide.

Gym Leader Morty
- Gastly - Lv. 21, 427 Exp
- Haunter - Lv. 21, 567 Exp
- Gengar - Lv. 25, 1017 Exp
- Haunter - Lv. 23, 621 Exp
Prizes: 2760 yen, Fog Badge, TM30 (Shadow Ball)
Strategies: Morty uses only Pokemon from the Gengar evolution line, who are all Ghost/Poison types. Taking their Levitate ability into account, they're weak to Psychic (due to their part Poison-typing), Ghost and Dark moves.
You can catch your own Gastly in the Sprout Tower during the night. By now, it may have even evolved into a Haunter. Note however, that most of the Ghost/Dark moves it should know by now are all physical (which is rather weak in the Gastly line), and won't learn a good Special Ghost move (Shadow Ball) until Level 33. However their Ghost type attacks will still work well in this gym. Hoothoot learns Psychic moves early on, so can also be a great asset here.
The Gengar evolution line is very fast and has great Special attack, so they can be deadly to your team if you're not prepared. However, this also means they have pretty terrible physical and Special Defense. As such, even without Super-Effective moves, they won't be able to take many attacks.
Watch out for Hypnosis, which can be annoying, so be sure to pack some Awakenings. Another advantage of Hoothoot in this Gym is that, if you got one with the Insomnia ability, they can't be put to sleep. On top of this, they're immune to Ghost type attacks, thanks to their Normal/Flying Dual-typing.
Leader Morty - Rebattle Team
- Drifblim - Lv. 52 (Ghost/Flying),
- Dusknoir - Lv. 52 (Ghost),
- Sableye - Lv. 52 (Ghost/Dark), 1092 Exp
- Mismagius - Lv. 54 (Ghost),
- Gengar - Lv. 57 (Ghost/Poison), 2321 Exp
- Gengar - Lv. 57 (Ghost/Poison), 2321 Exp
Important Note: You don't rematch the Gym Leader at their respective gyms, but instead in the Fighting Dojo in Saffron City of the Kanto Region.
You must first meet the Gym Leader outside of their Gym (which is in a set place at set times), where you obtain their phone number. You can then phone them for a rebattle at certain times, and they will be waiting in the Fighting Dojo.
