Azalea Gym

File:Azlea_Gym_Guide_1.PNG‎

The Azalea Gym specializes in Bug-Type pokemon, which are weak to fire, rock, and flying, and is led by Bugsy. This gym shouldn't be too hard if you caught a flying type like Pidgey (who learns Gust at level 9), a rock type like Geodude (or traded a Bellsprout for an Onix) or if you picked Cyndaquil as your starter (who learns Ember at level 10 in this game).

Important Note: you must defeat all rockets in the Slowpoke Well and talk to Kurt in his house before you can enter this gym.

Leader Bugsy

  • Metapod - Lv. 15, 231 Exp
  • Kakuna - Lv. 15, 228 Exp
  • Scyther - Lv. 17, 681 Exp

1800 yen, Hive Badge, TM 89 (U-Turn)

Strategy: The Leader battle shouldn't be too hard. Metapod/Kakuna are more of an annoyance, but watch out for Kakunas Poison Sting. Even if they Harden, using Special Attacks should get around this or use super effective moves. Bugsy's best pokemon, Scyther, is Bug/Flying which means it has a X4 weakness to Rock, so Geodude comes in very handy here. Scyther is also weak to Electric moves, and Mareep can be caught on the way to Azalea Town. Mareeps Thundershock should take care of Scyther pretty easily aswell, also Static may Paralyse Scyther if it uses a physical attack on Mareep.

Interestingly, Bugsy leads with Scyther in HG/SS.

Leader Bugdy - Rebattle Team

After completing the game, Gym Leaders can be battled again. Their teams have been improved with new Pokemon at higher levels than they appear the first time through.

  • Scizor - Lv. 56 (Bug/Steel), 2400 Exp
  • Shedinja - Lv. 48 (Bug/Ghost), 977 Exp
  • Yanmega - Lv. 52 (Bug/Flying),
  • Pinsir - Lv. 55 (Bug), 2357 Exp
  • Heracross - Lv. 54 (Bug/Fighting), 2314 Exp
  • Vespiquen - Lv. 52 (Bug/Flying),

Strategy: The best type to use in the Rebattle is Fire, as it's the only type which is Super-Effective against every Pokemon Bugsy is using, and is even X4 on Scizor and is it's only weakness.

Due to the Dual-Typing of many of Bugsy's new Pokemon, most have double weaknesses to some common types. For example, Vespiquen and Yanmega are X4 weak to Rock. This battle can be made significantly easier if you set up Stealth Rocks (CAN YOU GET THEM AT THIS POINT IN THE GAME?) at the start of the battle. This will cause both Yanmega and Vespiquen to lose half their health when their brought in, and should instantly knock out Shedinja (OR ATLEAST BREAK ITS FOCUS SASH IF IT'S HOLDING ONE).

Keep in mind that, due to its ability, Shedinja can only be hit by Super-Effective moves. So unless the pokemon you have out has one when it's being brought in, don't forget to switch.

Important Note: You don't rematch the Gym Leader at their respective gyms, but instead in the Fighting Dojo in Saffron City of the Kanto Region.

You must first meet the Gym Leader outside of their Gym (which is in a set place at set times), where you obtain their phone number. You can then phone them for a rebattle at certain times, and they will be waiting in the Fighting Dojo.
